Pilgrim’s Dole is a barleywine-style ale made with fifty percent wheat malt, or what we at New Holland call a wheatwine. Pilgrim’s Dole blends warming and slightly sweet flavors with a unique caramelized character. It would be an excellent accent to nutty dishes, fruit crisps or creme brulee.

New to my area and a pleasant surprise. Amber pour with a smallish white head. Very sweet aroma and taste but not cloying. Notes of vanilla, bready malt, caramel and a hint of fruity hops. The wheat seems to soften everything. Very good but I think it might get too sweet for my liking with any aging.

Comes out of the tap a clear mahogany with a thick, fine-bubbled wheat head that leaves some generous lacing. Malty aroma has a pineapple overtone and a note of horehound. Malty, fruity flavor has pineapple, orange and vanilla notes plus hints of horehound, cloves and caramel. Firm, fizzy texture leaves an enjoyable and flavorful finish. Make a pilgrimage for this one.

I did not enjoy this. I've had a couple of bottles and neither one particularly appealed to me. One was very acidic on the tongue, while the other had metallic notes to it. Both overpower the caramel notes present. A nice dark copper colour though is one of the highlights.

Not much of an aroma but it sure does have a lot of flavor going on. I've had a lot of barlywines and I think this one is my favorite, the wheat really makes it the flavors softer and more mellow. Their is a butteryness to the mouthfeel that is also quite nice. Really well done.

Yes this is very nice. Pours a very fizzy amber colour with big white head. Bright colour. Aroma is sweeter, frutier then what i anticipated. Pleasent and bright. Taste is soft initially, slight tartness with a grassy mixture. Little berry fruit.

Pours out in a clear amber colour with a small white head. Rich and solid aroma of crackers, , nuts, oranges, wheat, coconut and spicy alcohol,. Full-bodied with malty notes of nuts, cookies, fudge and coconut. Long warming finish of biscuit, oranges and mild spices.

How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home wine-making course, and I forgot how to drive?

This beer pours a nice deep copper color with bright amber highlights and is topped off by a thin light brown colored head that quickly drops into a thin film atop the beer. The aroma is very sweet with some distinct breadyness and a touch of caramel. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and slightly oily. The flavor is dominated by sweet toasty malts with a distinct wheat flavor and very nice accents of toffee, faint banana, and caramel.

I found this in a grocery store discounted for $0.99! So far this is the best bargain I've stumbled across, because this is a first class beer. Poured into my small snifter, mild brown color with an amber tint. Swirly light tan filmy head and streaky lacing along with a nice constant carbonation. Thick malt nose, lots of dark roasted grains. The wonderful aroma is reminiscent of plain breakfast cereal that is lightly sweetened. Hearty and cozy it's nice to the nose. Tantalizingly sweet with a touch of fresh alcohol, it eases the taste buds with a grand smoothness. The half wheat and half barley malts blend well. I can tell that the wheat is a major contributer, but the flavor is still similar to a nice English Barleywine. A fermented dry sweetness from both malts are dominant in this beer. Tasty cereal grains with toffee and caramel. Some brown sugar as well, it's mealy and rich. All about the malts here, hops if even present don't contribute except for some balance. What a great treat enjoyed on the night of my 5th wedding anniversary. I have no idea on the age of this bottle, but it seemed perfectly conditioned.

Pours a slightly hazy, bright copper color with a quarter inch head that fades quickly to a spotty cap and nice ring. Said ring leaves a pretty nice amount of lace behind. Smell; floral and picy upfront, with a fairly strong wheat presence in the nose. There's a bit of a fruity presence. Taste; fruity melons and some flavors that remind me of rum raisin bread. The wheaty flavors are there, along with a nice spicy flavor as well as a lingering sweetness with an alcohol bite mixed in. Mouthfeel is very thick and slighty syrupy, but not so much that it becomes distracting. I've had this on tap at the brewpub before and really liked. I didn't know how this would hold up in the bottle, but I think New Holland did a fine job with this one.
