Pours clearish caramel with a fair head. Aroma offers toasty malt, fruity and boozy notes. Flavor presents toasty malt, caramel, fruit and booze notes. Texture yields decent body and peppy fizz. Bark bark.

On tap @ Hair of the Dog. Copper amber pour, tight beige head and little lacing. Nicely hopped sided with huge malts, sweet and bitter all at once. Rich, lightly boozy, caramelly, warming.

Had this on tap a couple times now. Directly at Hair of the Dog in Portland. Poured a bright, translucent copper colour. Small off white head. Nose is pretty floral, sweet and plenty of hops. Taste is a little young. Holding onto this one for a few years will do it some good. Caramel is really noticeable and the hops aren't as well integrated. But still a very solid brew.

(2010 edition)Thank you Jeff!!!!!!! Mmmmmmmmmm…….My first hair of the dog!!! Coppery honey brown with a slight fog and a fluffy white cap. Massive peachy hop aroma that comes across sweet. Beer somehow just transformed into liquorish apple cinnamon thing!! How did that happen?!?!?! Slight caramel, massive malts all of it yum!! Taste is massive!! Peach bomb with wood and spice. Crap I can’t stop smelling this it is soooooooo good. Sweet malty caramel, hints of coffee balanced so nicely with the bitter sweet hops. Flowers, slight honey, maybe cherry, hidden wood. SMOOOOOOOOTH!!! Goes down fast. Fawk this is mind blowing!!! Peach-smooth-malty-sweet-awesomeness!!!

This is a 2010 batch that I tried at the Hair of the Dog Tasting Room yesterday. It came with an antique white head over a hazy brown liquid. Has a very thick fig aroma that is really awesome. Super creamy body and full, yet doesn't seem strong at all! Sweet and fruity but not overly so. What a great beer.

Now available in Toronto, this fine barleywine is a sight to behold. A beautiful copper coloured beer, with brownish hues, and clear filled the glass, topped off by a 1" beige cap. Sweet malt, raisins, and citrusy hops can be smelled in the air. The flavour, dominated by the sweet maltiness, is nicely balanced with a fine bitter finish.

2009. Bottle from South Bay. I had heard that the blue caps had carbonation issues so I expected this to be flat but that was not the case at all. Pours a deep amber color (the second pour looked muddy brown) with a nice initial frothy head and a thin layer of retention. The aroma is nice; maple, honey, grapefruit, caramel, some smoke and maybe even cherry. A very good barleywine. Plums, tobacco, brown sugar flavors, sweet caramel and toffee malt, balanced by grapefruit and bitter leafy hops. Towards the end of the bottle it gets quite resiny. The 11.5% provides some warmth but otherwise is hardly noticed. I continue to be amazed at the complexity of everything I’ve had so far from HotD and I’ll add this one to the need to re-visit list.

2008 Release: Came across as a nicely balanced barleywine. A lot of malted cereal in the aroma followed by wood, flowers and a heavy earthiness. Cloudy light brown pour with a thin head and minor spots of lacing. Good feeling with this one, damn drinkable for the style. Very malty and lightly sweet. Bran flakes, sweet caramel, honey buns, nuts and wood provide for an outstanding flavor. This is tasty.

i could see a half inch of sediment on the botttom of the bottle, and there was no head before a vigorous swirl produced a trace. intense hop aroma followed by some sweet malt and honey...quite intruiging. smooth medium to full body, fully masking the 11% abv. smooth. taste is way more in balance than i expected. best HOTD i’ve had to date. lots of floral and bitter hops, but expertly balanced with malt and the honey is the perfect touch. no sissy weak ass honey ale will ever do the trick again. 2012 totally flat. Hmmm...
