Pours midnight black with a tight (and we mean tight) mocha tan head. Menacing indeed. Aromas of charcoal, vanilla, treacle, espresso and alcohol leap from the glass with each gentle swirl. The first drink offers a reminder of the girth of this beer, as notes of bourbon, chocolate, molasses and fig pack a wallop. Each subsequent sip leads to newfound discoveries of vanilla and coffee, wood and anise. Velvety smooth yet noticeable boozy, this full-bodied stout packs a delicate balance between sweetness, bitterness and barrel.

The beer pours a solid black colour with a long lasting creamy brown head. The aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee….and lots of bourbon. The mouthfeel is full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is more bourbon than beer. Lots of burnt wood is present as well. -

500ml bottle from LCBO, with 11.5%abv on label. Pours an average size frothy tan head but then dissipates to a thin coating. Has a pitch black appearance. Some decent sticky lacing. Moderate carbonation. Aromas of vanilla beans, bourbon, some strong earthy and roasted malt notes. Flavours are mostly chocolatey, cacao nibs and dark roasted malts with some of the vanilla beans quite noticeable. The bourbon barrel aged notes are apparent throughout, the finish, the palate, nice and smooth. Some woodsy and coffee notes as well. A little of the alcohol is there but not offensive in the least, not too overpowering. Slick, warming and slightly oily mouthfeel. Very tasty and enjoyable impy stout.

500ml brown bottle from the LCBO. Pours a black colour with no highlights. Just a nice creamy-frothy, mocha-coloured head with decent retention and some light creamy lacing. Loads of chocolate notes in the nose, blended with some coconut sweetness. This seems like the vanilla bean that has fully taken part in here, combined with the bourbon barrel. It also appears in the flavours like this. Not as sweet, balanced by the hop bitterness in the finish. The alcohol is very well-hidden for the content, with a slight warming that lingers. With a silky full-bodied mouthfeel, this is quite a nice Imperial Stout. Worth the price.
