Big Train is a juicy, hazy IPA with zero calculated bitterness and is named after Walter “The Big Train” Johnson, a gentle giant of a pitcher who left more zeroes in his opponents’ box score than any other. Rather than the traditional method of adding hops throughout the boil, a large dose of Mosaic and Azacca hops were added post-boil in a hop stand at 75°C to release loads of juicy guava, papaya and orange flavours without imparting any of the bitterness that you might expect from an IPA. Generous amounts of oats and wheat in the grist combined with a massive dry hop make for a nice, stable haze.

Small can from LCBO. Pours an average size frothy white head, thick dirty lacing, has a slightly hazy golden appearance. Aromas of citrus and floral hops, a little bit grassy and yeasty. Flavours are mostly citrusy and yeasty, some mild tropical fruit notes. A bit piney and grassy as well. Hardly any bitterness on the palate, very smooth and slick. Mild dry finish. Good stuff.

Smaller 355ml can that pours a lightly hazy golden colour with an amber hue. The head is a warm off-white, frothy with a full creamy-foamy lace. Citrus aromas of orange and grapefruit juices with some of the zest. Hints of yeast. The taste is mostly oranges, but the hops gives some bitterness from the peel of these citrus fruits. Somewhat juicy and the bitterness does seem milder as it goes. Not completely zero IBU, but easier to drink for those who do not like too bitter. Particles in the last pour. Well done.

The beer pours a very hazed orange gold with a generous white head which lasts a few minutes and leaves a lot of lacing. The aroma is weak tropical fruit, cereal grains, musty hops. And yeast, The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is gross. The primary flavours are yeast, grains, and tropical fruits, but without the hoppy bitterness, it just doesn’t meld very well.
