In the cover of darkness, the mysteries of the forest are revealed to the Nightwatcher. This full-bodied oatmeal stout boasts distinct flavours of roasted malts complemented by chocolate tones. Velvety smooth with a bit of bite, it’s no mystery why this will be your favourite stout. For an incredibly smooth and chocolatey experience, look no further than the Nightwatcher Oatmeal Stout. The heady mocha foam sits beautifully atop this dark chestnut stout. The cocoa body is balanced with a subtle bite from Magnum and Hallertau hops that rounds off with the dry bitterness of prominent dark roasted malts. Nightwatcher was originally designed by our CEO & President, Darren Smith, as surprise for his wife after the birth of their bouncing baby boy, last winter. Awwww! Malts: 2-Row Pale, Caramel, Chocolate Malt, and Roast Barley Hops: Magnum, Hallertau

English and Irish style stouts have been a part of the Canadian brewing scene longer than Canada’s been a country, and it’s almost mandatory that all new craft brewers in the country make either a dry stout or an oatmeal stout. This isn’t in the list of better ones. It starts off a nice dark coca-cola colour but after that, everything falls short. It’s a thin stout with very bland roasted malt notes and even weaker cocoa notes.

The beer poured a colca-cola colour with a creamy tan coloured head which lasted a few minutes before settling to a film on top. The aroma was roasted malt, coffee, light vanilla notes, and some oats. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, cold coffee, and a very bitter finish. Quite one dimensional in both flavour and aroma.

Pours a dark copper colour, but not deep brown, with big highlights. The head is big though with some very good retention and thick soapy-creamy lace. Nice coffee nose at first pour with the chocolate malt notes. Then, some macro chemical-like hops invade. Some sweetness in the back from the oat. No body to it. Mild flavours of roasted malts, caramel malts and chocolate hints. The hops did not show at first sip, but seems to get more bitter and bitter, with a dryness that builds as well. So, a lighter oatmeal stout (not sure why) and compensated with more hops for the lack of malts (where is the oatmeal in the taste)? Yeah, not sure why (a session oatmeal stout??). Disappointing.
