Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the “American Brown Ale” style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped. Old Brown Dog has been around for many years. It was first brewed in 1988 at the Northampton Brewery. In 1989 it won a silver medal in its category (American Brown Ale) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. It has since been retired from competition but enjoys love and respect from people all over the world.

The beer pours a clear dark amber color capped off with an off-white creamy head that lasts a few minutes. Aroma is roasted malt, burnt wood, light caramel, weak citrusy hops, and yeast. The mouthfeel is average. The flavor is sweet caramel and bread, and followed by a bitter citrusy finish. An interesting flavor for a brown ale.

Wish I had a bottle of Moose Drool so I could compare the two. Up until now that is my favorite brown and this one may be my new favorite. Caramel, chocolate and molasses all wrapped up together so none of the three dominate.

12 ounce bottle, that I bought at Family Beer and Liquor in East Dubuque, IL. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smell is malty, nutty, with a little bit of chocolate and caramel. Taste is very similar with some raisin type flavor going on also. A really enjoyable brown ale.

A brown ale complete with the nutty and caramel notes that I love in the English style. A nice deep brown, semi-clear pour, with plenty of sweet malty notes and floral hops. Flavour has some of the nuttiness coming through.

Nothing really special with this one. I am finding the balance off a bit, but besides that the flavor is OK. A little rusty at first and bitter (not in the best way), but at the end the hops settles in and has a decent bitter-sweet flavor mixed in with the caramel malts. Might also be a little honey in there too. Color is about medium, not dark brown like some other brown ales. I may prefer nut browns over this though, or a Dutch Brown. There are better ones out there in this style.

Well, folks have raved about it and since the same folks that raved about it left a few spares in the fridge, I gave it a shot knowing that brown ales aren't my favorite. It was quite simply about what I expected... maybe slightly better than a New Castle, but not something I'd reach for over and over.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a medium foamy head with OK retention and no lacing. Aroma of deep caramel malt with light notes of molasses and some grain is quite enjoyable. Taste is a nice enough mix between some deep rich caramel malt with cereal and a light subtle touch of molasses. Hops are not very apparent which might be a good thing considering the nice malt base. Body is slightly above average with good carbonation. Well done – nice session beer.

This is my first try of a Smuttynose beer. This old dog poured a deep red with brownish tint. Small frothy white head that settls all too quickly into frothy ring. Strong malty aroma. Subtle pines follow to the nose. The body becomes fuller as it warms in my glass. Dry Finish. Nice complex taste of sweet malt, pine and a strongalcohol presence. I went back for seconds,and.....

Thanks to Beerhunter for hooking me up with the Smuttynose. Looks great with a large, lasting head atop a clear amber/brown body and sticky lacing. Warming aroma of nuts, chocolate and coffee. Malty body, fairly creamy with a rolling finish. Nice and soft feel to it. Sweet cocoa along with toast and caramel. I taste a heavy use of traditional English malts. An all around solid brown, very enjoyable.

This one comes out of the tap a cloudy, almost opaque, mahogany brown. Malty aroma has hints of spices and molasses. Rich flavor is mainly malty and has tones of cloves and molasses, as well as a hint of hops and a touch of sweetness. Silky-smooth texture leaves a tasty and pleasant finish.
