From the briny deep rises Smoke N’ Merroir, a smoked oyster stout that was brewed with freshly shucked British Columbia Oysters. Merroir (pronounced mare-wah) is the marine equivalent of ‘terroir,’ a word to describe how their underwater environment influences the flavour of the oysters used in the brew. A dry, sessionable stout, with notes of smoke, coffee, bitter chocolate, roasted grain, and a hint of the fresh ocean air. This stout is the perfect combination for a long winter night hunkered down at the pub.

On tap at Arrow and Loon. Pours very little head and goes away quickly. Has a very dark amber brownish appearance. Weak lacing. Aromas of light roasted malts, hints of coffee and cocoa. Flavours are of the malt variety, quite a lot of toasty and roasted malt notes. A bit chocolate and coffee. Oyster is very faint, no salty like taste, but quite smokey though. Slick and oily mouthfeel.

Sampled at the Loon. Pours a dark brown colour with a light beige head and good lacing. Farmlike aromas with a mix of chocolate, roasted malts and some dark fruits. Herbal notes, even hints of mint. Gets better as it warms up. Decent hop bitterness in the taste with light roasted malts and very mild saltiness. A hoppier oyster stout than normal for the style and less salty. Wish it was a tad saltier.
