Our Ninth Anniversary Beer All of the malt in this anniversary beer comes from Weyermann Malting, a family-owned operation in Bamberg, Germany, which is the center of Rauchbier (smoked beers) in Germany. The inspiration came from a trip that head brewer Todd Haug took to Bamberg to visit the Weyermann facility. NEIN draws from the traditional banana and clove notes of hefeweizen yeasts and layers on deeper toned malt flavors, a distinctly smoky character from oak-smoked wheat malt and charred “honeycombs” of white oak.

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

First off, have a sharp knife available as he wax seal on this bad boy was a bitch to cut through and take off. Beer was purchased on 10/31/2015. Afterwards, it was poured into a Surly snifter, yielding a dark brown color with one finger of foamy tan head which left some sporadic lacing on the sides of the glass. Aromas of smoked malt, bananas, caramel, oak and a hint of cloves. Layers of flavors. Smoked malt, cooked bananas, chocolate, cloves and oak. Mouthfeel is full and creamy. A unique and outstanding beer. I'm a bit sad now that it is finished, much like the departure of master brewer Todd Haug, who left and is now at Three Floyds, about 25 minutes from me. Hoping for more unique beers from them in the near future under Todd's guidance.
