Pours barely translucent mahogany, thin buff head. Bourbon-soaked wood dominates the aroma but lets roast malt and caramel peek through. Flavor has bold fruity - almost wine-like - woody and bourbon tones plus hints of roast malt and caramel. Texture has good fizz and firmness.

This is so sweet it is almost disgusting. It was a gift; not something that I would have bought myself at the price. It was drinkable, but more like syrup than beer. This did not have any of the qualities that I associate with a quad (no chocolate, too sweet, too thick a mouthfeel and texture, no raisins and dates, etc.), and is exactly the reason why I don't buy expensive beers from many breweries, especially Firestone Walker.

Not sure of the evolution of this beer, how it evolved from a tasty slightly oversweet barleywine, to an even more tasty, slightly oversweet "central coast" quad, but it's bottled...and that's a good thing. Belgian yeast and candi sugar are present under all that barrel-aged goodness. Very fruity, with brandy and bourbon coming through in the nose and on the palate. Sticky as suggested, though not hot coming in at 13%+. Really enjoyed this. Not quite up there with Abacus and Parabola, but not far off, either.
