BLAKKR Imperial Black Ale is the spawn of the long awaited collaboration between Surly, Three Floyds and Real Ale Brewing Company. Subtle dark malt and toffee character quickly yields to the citrus and tropical notes provided by a staggering amount of hops. Bonded by their love of brewing and love of metal, this unholy trinity of brewers has unleashed a crushing, black as night double IPA. Hail the mighty BLAKKR!

On tap at Surly and Three Floydds within 2 weeks of each other. Couldn't tell the difference between locations, but epic brew, hoppy, dark, balanced, exactly what you expect from these heavyweights.

Canned on 4/16/2014. Pours dark brown, almost black with some red hues. Foamy tan head that leaves some thick, sporadic lacing. Pine sap, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, fresh cut flowers, deeply roasted malt and cocoa aromas fill my nose. Tastes as it smells, the citrus, fresh pine lead the parade followed by the roasted malt, with hints of dark chocolate, coffee and burnt wood. Then the hops show up again on the finish, leaving a delightful, bitter ending. Amazingly complex and unique. One the most interesting beers I have yet to taste. Recommended to adventurous beer drinkers who like both hops and roasted malt. I can only hope this beer isn't a one off, although it probably is. Grab some if you can find it. A bit pricy, but well worth it.

Murky balck pour, beigey head and chunky lacing. Cocoa and roasted malts meet pine, citrus and some tropical fruits hops creating a flaovrful explosion. Cocoa, molasses, pine and earthines, citrus then tropical fruits sweetness, all in a nice hopy black ale.

Glad to find this, I figured it would be tougher to find. Really nice aromas, start with the tropical fruit, big pine tar, and some floral notes from the hops, as it warms the chocolate roasted malts come through, with some earth and booze. Deep black body with a thick cap that settles to a thin film, that leaves some decent lace. Taste hit me with booze upfront, thankfully that settled pretty quick and the other flavors stepped up. Floral, spicy pine resin, big juicy presence of citrus hop flavors of pineapple, orange peel, lemon, and mango. Dark roasted barley malts with notes of chocolate, burnt toast, coffee, grains, oats, light licorice presence as well. Overall im not a big black ale fan, but this stuff is pretty good, no, damn good.
