Nimbus Old Monkeyshine

Aroma is mainly hoppy and woody, not strong but inviting. It pours a clear umber with a thick, fine-bubbled wheat head. Malty flavor has notes of hops, caramel and cloves. Texture has decent body and fizz. In the mood for some monkeyshines? Here dey iz!

Bottle from@d3atlanta who knows I covet Monkey named beers... Ruby brown pour, medium head, spotty lacing. Sweet malty aroma and taste, then some nuts and earthy hops, slightly boozy especially after it warms a bit, some bread. Nice big warmer. Thanks Sam.

I had this one at (Alice) Cooperstown in Phoenix, AZ. I was looking for something a little different while out on the patio and saw this one behind the bar in a bottle. I was with some weather weenie friends of mine, so a Nimbus product was the obvious choice. It ended up being a hit with all in the meteorology group.

Now I must say before starting off this review that this one should not be served cold. I know most of you on Beerpal get this, but for the rookies, this one is a completely different story when served cold, as opposed to when left to warm up a bit. The color on this one was hazy, dark and brown. The head was a solid tan color and had decent retention, although it wasn't thick. The aroma was mostly that of nutty malts and a hint of caramel. For a strong ale, this one did a great job masking the alcohol. I really didn't pick up much on this in the aroma.

The drinkability was OK with this one. I felt like it could have had a little more in the way of thickness to it. Not that it was watery, it's just that it could have had more body. The flavor was good though. Nuts, caramel, spice, and even a back end with a slight bit of hop balanced this one out pretty well. As you let it warm up, a nice sweetness comes out to play with your tastebuds.

Overall, I'm thinking this one was a decent choice compared to the other crap that was served at Cooperstown's patio. Again it went over well with the friends who are not as geeked out on the brew as I am, but I think it could have been a little better crafted with regards to the aroma and mouthfeel. Decent brew.

Pretty good showing with this beer. An aroma of strong malts, subtle earthy character and a caramel undertone. Appearance is cola like in color with a smallish off-white head. Flavor is predominantly malts, slightly spicy with a clean finish. The 8% alcohol is hidden pretty well.

From notes. Pours a very murky/muddy brown, with a quarter inch off-white head that settles slowly to a soapy cap and ring. The lacing is pretty thick, but not very sticky. Smell; caramel malts and a touch of coffee up front, with a rich nutty aroma mixed in, and hints of tobacco. There's almost no hop aroma to speak of, but I'm not surprised. Taste; very rich and nutty up front, and then fades in to a mildly tobacco flavor. The caramel is present as well as some chocolate and coffee, and finished with just a touch of bitter hops. This is a bit more robust than your average brown ale. Mouthfee/Drinkability; mouthfeel is a bit fuller thatn I'm used to for a brown, but it seems to fit this flaover profile just right, and the drinkability is pretty darn good. The only thing than would keep this from be a good session beer, for me, is the alcohol.

Pours a dark, dark red with a small head. There is a floral hop aroma along with a bit of sweet malt and a touch of toffee. Not too hard on the old tastebuds.

Very distinct beer, from my limited experience. Good roasted flavor that starts light and carmel and finishes with a slightly stronger coffee flavor. Goes well with slightly spicy foods.

Poured a brownish red color with a very thin initial head that turned to a thin outer ring. Lacing was excellent, especially for this stronger beer. Some caramel underneath, but coffee came out stronger under the feature flavor of brown sugar. A slight pine hoppy touch in the finish. Mouthfeel was porter thin, was expecting something more rich from a name like this one. An odd beer, not sure what to compare it to. Overall not my cup of tea.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a medium dark brown foamy head with pretty god retention. Aroma contains lots of sweet roasted malt and toffee. The sweet roasted malt also dominates taste with a light hop presence at the end. Body is a bit too thin for my liking but alcohol is well hidden.

Light brown color. Deep malt flavor, not very hoppy. Lighter bodied strong ale. Nice flavor. Rich and round malts. Mouthfeel is full and round. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
