Starting with naturally-pure esker water, Mons Abbey Dubbel is brewed from a blend of Pilsen, Munich and Carafa malts. It’s hopped with Styrian Gold hops, and Hallertau Hersbrucker hops give it aroma. It’s finished with traditional dubbel spices. Before you open a bottle on Mons Abbey Dubbel, chill it to around 48°, and then tilt the glass and pour, allowing a nice head to form. Reserve the final ounce and pour it into a shot glass, yeast and all, and decide if you or your guest gets the flavorful brewer’s yeast. Mons Abbey Dubbe is wonderful with barbecue, smoked and stewed meats, or a nice thick steak. It’s delightful with a dessert of chocolate, bread pudding, dried fruit, or butter truffles. Salut!

The beer is a dark brown pour with ruby hints at the edges. The head is light brown in colour, creamy, and sticks around. Figs and raisins are the dominant aromas with yeast, spices, and roasted malt also present. Maybe a little bit of caramel as well. Like a lot of Dubbels, the beer starts off sweet with notes of nuts and fruit, but finishes bitter as the hops kick in. A good dubbel

Poured a dark brown with a large tan colour head with good retention and some nice lacing. Good looker. Aroma is light, fruity with some sweet malt .Taste’s not bad although a little on the sweet side. Strong malt background with dark fruits and a bit of spice. Medium body with nice creamy texture and good carbonation. Not the best Dubbel but acceptable.

After having the first two Mons (blonde and white) and having their corks pop on me, I decided to be extremely careful with this one. It was actually fine. Not over-carbonated like the others. Pours a copper colour with a red wine hue. Frothy beige head that is fizzy, with low retention and not much lace, but a small foamy coating over the brew stays. Big nutty yeast nose with some dark fruits (plums, raisins). The body is very carbonated and no burning is felt. Dark fruit flavours with some roasted malts and even hops in the finish. Not bad. Just not really a Dubbel, or at least not a high class one.
