Sour mash in a beer? Yep, you read that right. Brewer Eric Harper has gone old school for Summit Unchained #11. As in, Old 152. Inspired by the Kentucky Common beer style that was popular before Prohibition, it actually uses a sour mash of maize and rye in addition to traditional malts and Cluster hops (just about the only hop available in the U.S. back then). The results are anything but sour, yielding a chesnut-colored brew with a slightly spicy floral aroma, biscuit, caramel notes and crisp, clean bitterness.

Another winner in the Unchained series. It is refreshing to see a brewery try something new that isn't stronger or hoppier than everything else. Copper-amber pour with a fluffy white head. Aroma of floral and fruity hops, rye, bready malt and caramel. Rye and caramel are more prominent in the taste with enough floral hops to cleanse the palate. Great, sessionable beer.

Bottle. Reddish copper hue when held ot light. The khaki head is long lasting and relatively dense. A dusty smelling brew with some notes of old books and apple core. A little bit leathery in the nose. This taste like old leather and salty caramel. A bit of robust hopping is there, but certainly not overdone, just hints of citrus in the back end of each drink. There is some note of pear and celery in the finish. The body is softly carbonated and that adds to the smoothness. This is actually quite nice and interesting. It is like a petite amber, and made to be a crowd pleaser. Smooth and relatively light, but enough going on to keep you interested, a great balance that is rarely done correctly. Summit has a winner with this one.
