This imperial red ale takes the intense hop profile found in traditional double ipa and turns up the malt. It has big aromatic hop notes of grapefruit, peach, and melon--balanced by a smooth and surprisingly robust malt body.

Tasting Notes - On Tap at Brick Store in Atlanta at a 2012 Premire. This poured a dark amber color with a beige head. The aroma is full of citrus, caramel, and some dark fruit. The flavor is very bitter like an Impy IPA with many malty aspects of an amber ale. This is well balanced and tasty. Overall this is a good beer.

This could be between a 7.5-8 overall, but closer to 8. I find a good quality imperial red to be slightly better than this. Still good and drinkable though. My 2nd favorite in the beer camp variety pack (Imperial Oatmeal Stout top choice). Some new flavors from sierra, but didn't work as well as other west coast stuff like Lagunitas and Stone.

Pours a dark brown color. Smell is strong of hops. Taste is hops, pine, some alcohol, a bit of malts. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Sampled on 9/20/2012. This American Strong Ale pours a deep red color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head with good lacing and nice retention. The aroma is caramel and sweet, with a whole lot of piney and grapefruity hops. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are fruity, caramel and sweet. The hops are piney, grapefruity and citrusy. A big hoppy beer with a whole lot of malt. Good balance between the hops and malts, but there are a whole lotta hops in this beer, a whole lotta hops. Nice carbonation. A little malt sweetness at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.

I have enjoyed the Beer camp variety pack. It made me use the bathroom on my bedroom wall.? It had the coin SN taste with a richer malted overtone. Going down was quite easy and nice. It was very refreshing drinking this on labor day. Hats off.

Pretty good for a red ale! It's supposedly a double IPA with extra malt. The malt taste is there, but not the extra hops - they kind of cancel each other out. It's a good red ale. A deep, mellow ale taste. The alcohol level is the real plus. For the price per bottle, this is a good buy. Taste is nice, and it goes good with any warm, stinky cheese. I'm finding this in Sierra Nevada's 2012 Beer Camp 12-packs - 4 bottles per case - and I plan to cellar many of these. Recommended.

My 2nd favorite from this years pack. Earthy, toasty and nutty along with a snappy bitterness. Clean malt profile providing some balance. Fruity pine, caramel and sticky hops. Dark amber copper color, 1" off white head and tight carbonation.

This is a good beer but a little disappointing based on my expectations. Hard to believe this would be a double IPA if not for the extra malt. Very balanced as advertised but I wasn't a fan of the hop profile--more earthy than fruity; not as noticeable with the caramel and biscuit notes from the malt.

2nd beer tried out of 2012 mixer, and another winner. Malt-wise reminds me of a Tahoe Red...nutty and slightly sweet. Dark. The hops are almost in contrast but it works really well, and the brewer's description is spot on...peach and grapefruit dominate the hops. Nice brew.
