Eighteen miles from Pizza Port to Stone with Green Flash in the middle. We gathered to collaborate. We brewed Scottish ale to bridge the gaps. Using the best pale malts and crystal malts, Sucanat sugar, European hops and traditional yeast. At one of the world's top craft brewing epicenters: Stone brewing, just off highway 78. We brewed our special malty ale: Highway 78 scotch ale. A reflection on a proud moment .. brewing with Jeff and Mitch. What a treat! Cheers!

Rated in June 2011. 12oz bottle pours a nice clear dark ruby red amber with mocha head. The aroma has a nice mix of roasted malts, prune puree, sugar sweet dark cherry candy and faint leathery tobacco off in the background. The taste is smooth with smooth sweet ripe dark cherries, prunes, sweet malts, tootsie roll and a bit of molasses. It gets a touch earthy to midway and into the finish. I think this was just what they were going for. It isn’t a bold crazy brew but smooth rich and yummy. I like it.

A big thanks to Slowrunner77 for this brewski! I am not a big scotch ale fan, however, I was into this one. There was peat, some hints of smokiness, and a TON of malt. What made this enjoyable for me was the fact that this didn't taste like soy sauce. A very nice beer.

    12oz bottle -

Aroma and flavor had some oxidation and while sometimes I think oxidation can be nice in certain styles (including scotch ales), because this was an ale of what thought was on the "delicate" side, the oxidation didn't help it. But, still a really nice beer.

Sampled on 3/12/2011. This collaborative scotch ale from Stone/Green Flash/Pizza Port Carlsbad pours a medium to dark amber color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is malty, peaty and sweet. Medium bodied Scotch Ale. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are herbal. This beer is a little peaty and a touch smoky, but definitely more malty and anything else. Nice balance. Very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Body is root beer brown color, thin head some lace. Aromas of caramel malts, peat, and a touch of smoke. Flavors were true to the aroma, mouthfeel is smooth. Overall this collaboration plays it safe, it is understated and not too aggressive, however it is a decent and drinkable ale.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark amber brown with a smallish creamy off white head that retains fairly well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is a bit subdued - some sweet peaty smokey malts with a little dark fruit and alcohol.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts with some peat and smoke and a some bitter alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a decent Scotch Ale. I would prefer it to be a bit better balanced between the sweetness and alcohol.

Nice find from a recent trip to oHIo: Somewhat cloudy cola brown pour with a thin head reducing to a ring then cap, cream colored, leaving spotty lacing. Nice sweet and malty aroma with a hint of orange, some earthy peat, alcohol. Taste is mildly sweet and nicely malty, again caramel, hint of orange, touch of smoke, smidgen of peat. True to the style, very tasty, warming, this is a good collaboration beer. Nicely done.

nice use of peat, along with a tobacco aspect to the aroma and flavor that i really dug. if it weren't for those things, this would be uninspired, but it turned out a nice malt bomb if a little thin.

It pours a dark brown and orange with no head nor lace. An aroma of caramel malts, faint hops, orange, sarsparilla, licorace, coffee, light molasses, and some spice. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, orange/citrus, licorace, coffee, light molasses, yeast, and spices. Excellent!
