As part of Firestone Walker’s new seasonal program Velvet Merlin will replace Solace, their summertime wheat fusion offering, on store shelves. Velvet Merlin is the perfect beer for the holidays, a nice comforting creamy beer with familiar flavors. “Anyone who has an attraction to coffee, any attraction to chocolate, will love this beer,” brew master Matt Brynildson said. Velvet Merlin is also partially blended with Merlin that has been aged in bourbon barrels for a year. The aging adds even more complexity to this very rich beer. The use of US grown Fuggles gives the perfect hop flavor to this exceptionally well-balanced beer. Velvet Merlin will be available on draft and in six packs along the West Coast in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada.

A huge thanks to SlowRunner77. This beer was stellar. Smooth as silk, deep malts - heave mocha. The color is dark brown and the palate slick. I loved this beer. The head retention was a bit short; however, a great overall beer. Thank you Chris!

Very dark brown with ruby highlights. Disappointing appearance for a 5.5% abv stout. Mild coffee aroma. Thin bodied for an oatmeal stout. Ok flavour of roasted malt, sweet coffee and milk chocolate. I'm a big fan of Firestone Walker but I think this is a bit of a miss.

Dark brown color with red highlights. Small, quickly disappearing tan head. Aromas of coffee and roasted malt with hints of chocolate (stronger) and toffee. Smell is what reminiscent of Guinness Extra Stout. Coffee and roasted malts lead the flavor profile with a touch of chocolate. Flavors intensify as it warms. A bit thin for a stout, which is a drawback for me. A pretty tasty stout, but not sure I will revisit when the 6 pack is gone. I used a bottle to braise a pot roast, which turned out delicious.

Pours a dark, deep near black, moderate cap of tan froth. Scent is dark, roasty with some ash and char, notes of spent coffee grinds, bitter cocoa, some leafy hops thrown in. Taste follows scent. Expected a bit more body and smoothness from style. Decent oatmeal stout, doesn't wow in any particular way.

Pours pretty brown, a bit murkey with tan head that doesn't stick around long. The aroma is strong, and mostly coffee but some roast notes as well. The mouthfeel was a bit thin, not what I was expecting. Flavor is burnt roast malts and coffee, not bad but not very impressive considering who made it.

Black with small brown foam head. Aroma is coffee, taste is coffee, chocolate. Aftertaste is lasting coffee. At beer tasting in Rockwell Bar & Grill(Houston 201310)

Comes out of the tap a dark-chocolate brown just a few whiskers above black with a thick tan head. Strong, smoky aroma has rich notes of chocolate, quality coffee and licorice. Mouth-filling, smoky flavor delights the taste buds with molasses, coffee, chocolate and licorice - a liquid feast. Sweet and hop-bitter hints balance each other nicely. Texture has full body and plenty of fizz. Magically delicious. ;)

Now that I'm living on the left coast, there is an over-abundance of good brew at my fingertips at all times. Everything I've had from FW has been good so far. This beer I found flat out predictable and boring. Pours a murky brownish black. Not much froth. Aroma is weak. Nutty and some slight smoke. Taste is milky, faint chocolat but finishes soft and slightly watery.

Very nice stout. Medium bodied, oat smoothness, a touch of tart coffee, some other standard stout characteristics like toast and maybe a touch of seeds, great stout for the price. Very simple but well arranged and balanced. Would buy again.

12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a big creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass a little.
The aroma is roasted malt, oatmeal and some coffee.
The flavor is a little on the mild side - some sweet chocolate and caramel malts with some earthy coffee notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly watery.
Overall, a decent oatmeal stout, but a little on the mild and sweet side. I slightly preferred the Slow Elk by Big Sky which is very similar.
