We brew a different beer style for our Jolly Rodger every year. For the 21st addition of our winter seasonal, we have made it an Imperial Red Ale. Be prepared for a big, malty, red ale, with a huge hop aroma. We mashed in with plenty of two-row barley, CaraRed and Chocolate malt for body and flavor. Then we hopped it up with Columbus for bittering, then for flavor and aroma – lots of Chinook and Cascade. Finally we dry-hopped in the fermenter with loads more Chinook and Cascade.

Had this aged ale at the Baileys Taproom in Portland. Still full bodied and quite malty, but the hops have faded quite a bit, leaving behind a little fruit and a little bitterness. Good enough still that I wish I could have had it fresh.

I really liked this beer. Poured a dark copper/red with a mild sized head that diminished quickly. A nice smooth hop flavor with just a touch of spice. Quite good.

Sampled on 11/27/2010. This American Strong Ale pours a medium reddish copper amber color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with decent lacing and good retention. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet. A medium bodied Double Red/American Strong Ale. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy, grapefruity and floral. Nicely balanced, lots of malt sweetness and a ton of hop bitterness. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
