In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.Featuring the album's iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew will be unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, June 5, National Building Museum, Washington DC. Haven't experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collector's Edition -- will be available Tuesday, August 31. The newly created ale is designed, according to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, "as the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album." Calagione was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan." "There's a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, thats at the core of Miles' music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one."

Thick and black with a very dark brown head. large bubbles. Fully body and very sweet. Super smooth. Hardly any aroma, but a little sweetness. Flavor is sweet with strong alcohol in the back end as it dries. Too sweet for me. Not impressed at all!

"Pours black with minimal head. Burnt coffee, dark chocolate and tobacco notes present themselves in a strong, interesting aroma. Flavor begins dry, smoky, and boozy but a whisper of sweetness balances it nicely. Not a real big fan of this one.

Black with foamy brown head, not much lacing. Roasted malt and smoke aroma. This brew could be the start of some heartburn. Roasted malt and dark chocolate flavors. Add honey, tobacco and spice with a metallic background. Sticky mouthfeel. I can see why the reviews are so varied for this beer.Kind of undecided myself. Don't think I would buy this again unless it was on draught.

750 ml bottle. Pours black-brown with a big creamy brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is lots of roast with sweet malts.

The flavor is lots of roast with black licorice and a little sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a pretty watery.

Overall, a decent sweet and roasty imperial stout. Almost tastes like a nitro. I don't really notice the honey other than a little residual sweetness.

Pours black with minimal head. Burnt coffee, dark chocolate and tobacco notes present themselves in a strong, interesting aroma. Flavor begins dry, smoky, and boozy but a whisper of sweetness balances it nicely. Full bodied, gently carbonated, almost a milky mouthfeel. Rich. A delicious tribute beer.

Ok. I am upset. I really wanted to get a bottle of this...but my buddy wound up bringing one camping, and I bought something else instead. The plan was to grab a bottle when I got home if I liked it. We shared about 4 ways, and I got enough of a sample...but wanted to sample again. Went to Total Wine and More today...all sold out. I probably will find it somewhere....still not sure if 100% worth the price...but a good tasty brew. Chocolate and coffee (maybe some chicory) stand out with good balance, and not super-strong.. so drinks easily for the strength. May sample again and possibly downgrade the rating a bit...but for now low 4's seems about right.

Opaque black with a dark khaki ring. Roasted alcohol aroma and a bitter soy sauce flavor, tobacco smokey and sour. Honey is buried deep, but it's there.

Tried this one on tap, and it was a bit too cold when served, i had to let it warm a bit.Aromas of burnt coffee, hints of chocolate. Standard Imperial stout apppearance, Mouthfeel was nice, not overly heavy. Flavors leaned toward burnt coffee grounds, licorice, and some chocolate. I didnt detect any honey, and to me it wasnt very complex, but soild none the less. Overall it was decent and i would like to try it again.

Beer 5 of my 12 Beers of Christmas. Cool Daddio Big PfoxyJohn brought this Wish List groovy load of goodness to my bad self. Way dark-as-an-African night pour with a smooth tall head, man, and some tight lacing. Most excellent and righteous aromas of the sweetness of Tupelo Honey, like far out, and some back bass of toasted malt goodness, all serving the better good of pleasing my nose; makes me want to do a Pharaoh's Dance. Then this bad ass brew hit my tongue: yeah man, it is right on! good dose of honey sweet like a sweet Gibson guitar jazz lick, then those beautiful roasted malts and molasses with a bitter Miles himself would be proud of. This is one righteous ass brew. Smooth as early Miles Davis' albums, different as the ground the man broke in jazz, all of this whilst fully enjoying Miles Davis Bitches Brew (Legacy Edition) - Miles Runs The Voodoo Down.. and it is in this bottle and now my glass. Yes. I dig this; it is Sanctuary.

Thanks to Bill who brought this to Black Sunday III .. . Pours a plum black, light foam .. . cooking chocolate, coffee grounds, touches of honey in the mouth .. . has a nice feel to it, and not to heavy so the dorky jazz fans can sit back and get looped .. . Yes! It was a lot like the Monster Mash, except this was definitely not a graveyard smash...
