Headstrong Black and Tan

I thought a black and tan was supposed to separate in the glass due to density differences. All I saw here was a dark brown beer with a light brown head. Lots of roasted malt and chocolate in the aroma, not much in the way of hops though. It wasn't a bad beer, but I had expectations that weren't met.

The beer poured a translucent chestnut brown (appears solid but when held to light some seeps through) with a thing beige head. The aroma is roasted malt, and coffee. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with mild carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, some coffee, some dark chocolate and a nice bitter finish. A goiod beer.

Can: Poured a light color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with light residual sugar. Taste is also dominated by light roasted malt with residual sugar and thin finish. Body is quite thin with good carbonation. Bland with a body way too thin for the style. No need to try this one again.

Third beer from Headstrong at the LCBO (which no one seems to know who really brews these - says Big Hole Brewing from Utica, NY). Pours a clean caramel-brown colour with a big beige head, and decent retention and lacing. Ruby highlights glow through and carbonation is pretty light with tiny bubbles. Mild aromas of roasted malt, biscuit and hop - nicely balanced. Flat watery mouthfeel that is at least refreshing. Their specific hop is present all the way through (not too powerful, but overpowering the malt) and goes into a smokey burnt aftertaste. I prefer seeing black & tan made from scratch, but this one is refreshing at the most.

Can: Pours clear dark chestnut with ruby hihglights, Decent 2 finger cap does not last. Pleasant but faint aromas: some sweetness, roast , fruit, grassyness, clean. Decent compliment of pale and dark malts in front woth a nice mixed hop bittering and char astringency drying up the finish. Flavourful perhaps a tad thin but very approachable and soothing. Tastes remarkably like Saranac black& tan
