The idea for the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series Island Creek Oyster Stout came after years of enjoying locally harvested oysters over freshly brewed pints of beer with our friends from Island Creek. Stouts have long been paired with oysters, though seldom brewed with them. This is our take on the age-old tradition. Brewed by Harpoon brewer Katie Tame, using Island Creek oyster farmer Skip Bennett’s revered Duxbury Bay oysters, this beer has a rich body and smooth mouthfeel derived in part from a combination of roasted barley and chocolate rye malts. The roasted malt notes blend beautifully with the briny, mineral flavors of the Island Creek oysters. An addition of hops adds some bitterness to balance the malt sweetness. This, the 30th installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series, is best enjoyed with a plate full of Island Creek Oysters. We hope beer and oyster lovers have as much fun drinking it as we had brewing it.

From my Charleston excursion a few months ago via Charleston Beer Exchange... pours black as one would expect with a slight, albeit fluffy tan head - laces forever and a day. Medium-bodied with a complex chocolate-malt-coffee aroma and flavor. Maybe I missed the "oyster" part, unless it was the light brackish-salty-earthiness. Satisfying.

I have to admit I thought this stuff was terrible. Salty and one could taste the minerals. No, I didn't like this one. I do love Harpoon beer however.

I was a little afraid of this one, but you can barely taste the oysters. They add a little bit of sweetness for sure, as the more you drink the flavor sort of lingers around. Hard to describe, but intersting and tasty. Fairly well-balanced as well. A little on the pricey side, but worth the try. I will be traveling to the Providence/Boston area next month, so curious to try some more of the (100 Barrel Series) selections while up there.

Seasiders!! .. Dark Brown .. Medium 2inch cream head .. great lacing .. cooking choc, light earthiness, soil, and espresso mineral .. . has a light roast to it, medium mouthfeel .. . I don't think I'd win the couch potato Olympics .. . employable and definitely worth a look! .. . sir, you can't park your van on the diving board ..

A stout blackness in color. Just as I’d expect and so enjoy. A frothy, light tan head rises above. It is disappointingly short lived. A ringlet and dusting are left behind. The aroma is bold and seaworthy. Roasted coffee, chocolate, and malt rise to the nose. It is adequately carbonated adding to the characteristics of a medium bodied, smooth ale. The flavors are complex and in that a great stout. Bittering coffee, semisweet chocolate, roastiness and the brine of mollusks all dance beautifully balanced. If you like stouts, this one is a must in your shopping list.
