Pitch black with small brown foam head. Some yeast in bottle. Aroma is whiskey dominated, so is taste. Not too much beer taste left. Good for small sips drinking. (Antwerpen 201404)

Not bad but a bit of a let down for me.It pours black with a thick head of light brown. The spongy foam settled to a good quarter inch.Aroma is laden with coffee grounds, roasted barley, and bitter chocolate.Mouthfeel is dry and thick. The pallet is filled with coffee, somewhat bitter in nature, akin to spent grounds. After the coffee, plenty of dry and roasty chocolate steps up, as does some acrid black malt, alcohol is noticeable.A big beer for sure, but the coffee is a bit harsh, the combination of the bitter coffee, and charred bitterness detract from the drinkability.

the vanilla and coffee are most apparent on the nose. chocolate as well, and a little alcohol. smooth brew, as was a couple of the barreled versions. honey a little more evident in the flavor which is quite sweet, but because of the roasted malt and char character isn't too sweet. nice beer, but a bit steep to revisit much if at all.

Let me start this one by stating, Mikkeller puts out great beer. This one, just as I like my beer pours a richly jet black in color. Unfortunately the head is a major disappointment. Small, soapy textured dark tan head rises briefly above. Settles in short order into a coating aside the glass and thin soapy ringlet. The nose is all roasted malt, some bitterness and a lot of alcohol. The tasting adds, prominently bittering chocolate. The body lacks carbonation though is medium to thick. Overall, an okay beer. Just doesn’t deliver to my expectations or the price tag.

Thick black body with a tall creamy cap, and how this cap was formed with the massive alcohol I don’t know. Aroma is very odd but similar to other coffee stouts, there is of course massive coffee, burnt charcoal malts, vanilla, and bitter chocolate truffles. Heavy strong coffee in the flavor with tons of earth, this goes down creamy and warm. Lots of sweetness lingers. I think I detect raspberry but maybe not it also might be apple I really can’t pin it down. The bitterness might be a touch over the top for my liking in a stout, but I really love how heavy this brew feels. This beer is overqall very awesome but I think I’ll let my other bottle age for a few years to let the bitterness mellow.

I want to love this beer....especially for what I paid, but I just can't. It's a solid IPS, but not one of the best that I've had. Still waiting to try that DFH World Wide Stout I'm aging to eventually compare. This is one of the blackest beers I've had.....even more so than Stoudt's Fat Dog. No head whatsoever....it's simply thick oily mud. The aroma is soy sauce, can smell a little coffee/espresso, etc. in there, but it really isn't that great to me (although a lot of beers in this style are sour like this...and I love stouts and porters..so I accept that). Anyways, the 13.5% is a +, as I am rambling away so must be doing something good :). Flavor is very robust, almost overwhelming with all kinds of goodies and sharp alcohol bite....although not too bad for 13.5%. Goes away though with a sweet malty oil that lingers on the palet, followed by decent hop end. I am just about done sipping my 2nd half of the bottle, and liking it more towards the end (flavor not quite a 9).....but still....for the $$$ and what it is........I'd say just ehhh.

First and foremost, this beer was WAY TOO EXPENSIVE for what it is. The beer wasn't bad but it wasn't worth the money. This beer poured flat - ZERO head and seemed a tad thin to me. For a 13% beer, this beer was entirely too "runny" - I expected the beer to be a bit bolder and chewier. The taste wasn't bad - but the alcohol was very noticeable. I don't think I would recommend this beer mainly because of the price. I have found that Mikkeller is a generally over-priced brewery. For better beer at a lower price, I would recommend DFH World Wide Stout - that beer is incredible!

Poured into a pint glass from a 375 ml (12.7 oz.) corked bottle. The pour is almost black with a small brown head. The head quickly recedes, but there is good lacing. The nose is sweet with strong notes of coffee, some dark fruits and alcohol. The taste again has the coffee after the sweetness, like you've added a bit of sugar without stirring. That is followed by the dark fruits mixing with the coffee. Alcohol is present but not dominant. Surprisingly, there is very little bitterness. Mouthfeel is very thick with a low amount of carbonation. However, it is smooth and silky. Drinkability suffers a bit with the sweetness. One bottle is enough for me. This would be a nice warmer in the winter, but it isn't bad on a warm spring night. The 13.1% ABV definitely hit me before I even finished this review. However, the price seems kind of steep for the end result. I will probably not buy it again, but I won't refuse a glass if offered.

Not exactly worth the money IMO... Pours black with no head and smells of alcohol and chocolate and lots of coffee and some toffee.. decent carbonation with a flimsy full body and finished a bit dry but still ok. Flavor was so strong in Alcohol flavor that it was hard to enjoy what coffee I got out of it. A very complex brew but was really turned of by the overwhelming burning that is possess.. Pretty much a let down

375 ml "champagne" bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 13.1%. The beer is pitch black, impenetrable for light (hence the name). Nice brown head. Intense aroma of malts, alcohol, coffee, burnt sugar and vanilla. The flavour is intense and overwhelming: an aggressive malty sweetness, backed up by honey and dark sugars, with distinct notes of roasted barley (but not quite as extreme in that respect as I expected ), the coffee is distinct, and the vanilla is also noticeable. Distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. This is a "sipping beer", to be savoured slowly - definitely not a "refreshment beer". Not for the squeamish or faint hearted.
