This Bavarian favorite celebrates the German tradition of brewing a strong, pale lager for release in early May. Maibock is traditionally drunk to mark the onset of summer and is usually paler and less full bodied with a little more hop bitterness. It is a reminder of the days when beer production was seasonal. Complex malt flavors dominate this copper colored beer that is uncommonly smooth due to a full six weeks of cold conditioning.

Poured a dark golden color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, wood, toasted dough, and caramel malts. Taste of nuts, caramel malts, toffee, citrus, bread, and a dry finish. A bit of alcohol, and raisins in the finish.

Poured a light golden color almost not head or lacing to speak of. Aroma was of grass and light fruits. Flavor was of white grapes and pears grassy hops. Very carbonated. Okay beer.

Draft at the brewpub while picking up a couple bottles of the Bourbon Barrell aged McBride's Strong Ale. Poured a clear bright golden color, steady flow of carbonation bubbles rising to the top, whimpy head, weak lacing. The aroma was bubble gum, some light fruits, light grass, sweet malts. The flavor was thick malty, light fruits of pears and some grapes, finishing with a light grassy bitterness. The latter was shy of levels to qualify this as a double pilsner (and it didn't have the honey notes of a typical pilsner eitehr) However, this was more of a helles bock with pilsner influences, lacking the doughiness notes (as well as the bubblegum notes I like in these beers normally) that I love in a pale bock / maibock this time of year. An odd beer to be called a bock, more ale-like than lager like, quite sweet and thick, seemingly higher abv than a regular bock (doppelbock like), but as a strong ale/lager, this thing was pretty tasty, even if a bit too sweet / fruity. High carbonation and the light hops combined together to give a little bit of zing in the finish, so it wasn't all malts, just stickier and maltier than hoppy by far.

Another enjoyable brew from Stewarts. Poured clean pale color, little head and lacing. The flavor in this was really well balanced. All the sweetness of a nice fruity bock, but lighter and with a hop balance that made this a beer I could drink all night long.
