Really enjoyed this black beauty. Lots of malt and roasted barley. Little bit of licorice and chocolate. This ain’t mead but I bet those Vikings would have liked it.

Pours a pitch black with a tiny head that goes away instantly. Aroma is very intense with roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee. notice a little fig to it as well on the nose. For an imperial the taste is actually fairly mellow with hints of roasted malts and coffee. Slight booze at the end. Sticky ending. I like it.

Initial pour looks great. Black body with a large brown head. Head settles to leave a thin cap and not much lace. Rich aroma of roasted malt and espresso. Strong roasted malt flavour. Dark chocolate, espresso, licorice and a little bitterness. Would expect a fuller mouthfeel from a beer with such a robust flavour. More please.

First brew tried from Nøgne Ø Brewery from Norway (actually first one from that country after 10 years of rating), found at the LCBO. Huge medium-brown creamy head that has great retention and lacing. The brew is completely dark with no signs of red highlights. Decent cacao scent with notes of vanilla, roasted malt and creamy coffee. Very smooth and silky mouthfeel with no burning at all. Lightly bitter the whole way, with well-balanced light coffee, roasted malts, dark fruits, molasses and hints of burnt wood in the aftertaste. Quite an easy-drinking Imperial Stout that is very well-brewed overall. Nothing too overpowering, but lightly blended in this nice beer.

A little disappointed in this sampler, but it still warrants a review. Pours black with a small head. The aroma turned me off from the start with potent metal notes overshadowing roasted malt and hops. I seriously hate the smell; I cannot rule out the possibility of this being a bad bottle, but I know it arrived at my purveyor's only this morning. Flavor was sour and bitter and, while better than the aroma, not by much. Medium bodied, moderately carbonated. I probably wouldn't have finished it had it been inexpensive. Enough said.

Beer pours out of the bottle like thick black syrup, small brown film on top. Medium sweetness, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, nothing burnt. This aroma is 89 yums out of 56.98. Taste is the same, complex without being complicated if you know what i mean. Taste is strong with out ever becoming intense and that's a hard balance to achieve. I could drink this all night long. Great brew i'm sad i shared the bottle.

Now available in Toronto, this was one hell of a beer. A beautiful shimmering black pour with a tight creamy brown head. Aroma is full of bitter coffee and dark chocolate. Flavour is similar with a nice sweetness to complement the bitterness.

Well, it has its good points and bad points. All in all it is really a cut above the rest, but..it pours rich dark "old coffee" black (good). It smells good, but...sharp. Mouthfeel has a bit too much of sharpness going on (vomit?). Thankfully the flavor makes up for it and it's all good. I thought warming might help but it actually got worse as it warmed. Just sayin'. Have had better, have had much, much worse.

Thanks Slowrunner for sending this bottle my way. I thoroughly enjoyed this as I poured the entire contents into my Sam Smith's imperial pint glass. Thick deep brown body with a 2" thick, lasting brown head. Aroma is full of dark malts, coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is exceptionally dry yet hearty enough to remind you it's an imperial version. Flavor follows suit with the aroma and the beer finishes dry and pleasant. The coffee lingers in the aftertaste and layers of chocolate continued to develop until the glass was emptied. I've seen this around and it carries a hefty price tag which can be detracting so another thanks to Chris for his generosity.
