Definitely showed some signs of age, but has a lot of pleasant qualities as well. Bitter chocolate, slight licorice and coffee, and a charred smokiness in the aroma and flavor. Still pretty smooth, though the alcohol shows. Bitter hops and raisins in the finish. Long time wish list surprise.

Bottle of Batch 7,000 broken out on Dark Lord Day.....wow, this imperial stout has held up amazingly well and transformed into a sweet sipper. Dark berries, licorice, a hint of smoke, chocolate galore and just plain old fashioned goodness. Thanks Bruce for the unexpected mid-day treat.

Sampled from bottle, a gift from amatuerbeerguy. Pours opaque black with a thin, creamy dark tan head. Its aroma is awesome. Cocoa, caramel, stone fruit and earthy hops(?). Slightly sweet flavor with raisin, molasses, coffee and chocolate. Viscous and moderately carbonated. A complex sipper.

Pours black with an impressive, rising head like Guinness that lasted the whole glass. Earthy base notes meet wood, whiskey and raison aromas. The strong nose led me to expect big, overwhelming flavor. I was not disappointed. Rich coffee and dark, dark, dark chocolate dominate the flavor yet hops are not absent; there is subtle floral bitterness. It's certainly not balanced, but it's not meant to be. Full bodied, well carbonated, and little warming affect. Bold and satisfying.

Bottle courtesy Slob. Pour was deep dark black with a chocolate brown colored head, slow developing, thinning to a brownish ring around the glass, leaving behind quite nice splotchy lacing for a beer of this strength. The aroma was tons of piney hops, chocolate, sticky maple, dark fruits. The flavor was sticky maple, pine hops (strong), citrus hops, roasted malts, chocolate, brandy, cherries, assorted dark fruits. A darned bitter finish. The mouthfeel was sticky but not really that thick for the style and reported ABV, somewhat grainy thin in some ways. Odd. A nice Impy Stout, but I've had better. The flavors, while complex, didn't blend together to win me over. Thanks, Bert, for this great and generous opportunity. This was rather enjoyable even if not a stand-out like last night's Batch 6000 that I drooled into. Seems like others liked this way more than I anyway.

Pours a midnight black with a thin brown/ruddy head that quickly fades to a thin ring, that leaves spotty lacing behind. This is one of the darkest beers I've seen. Smell; lots of dark roasted malts, coffee, rich dark chocolate. There's also a bit of a leathery quality to the aroma. Taste; roasted malts and chocolate come out first, followed a nice espresso flavor. I get some touches of licorice floating around, and there's a hints of slightly sweet cherries, and a bitterness from the hops, with a slight warming from the alcohol in the finish. This isn't nearly as bitter as I had expected from reading some previous reviews. Mouthfeel is nice and full, and very rich. This is an excellent double stout.

12 oz bottle, purchased a year ago (1/2/06) and kept refrigerated. Pours and inky black with a thin but fine brown head that quickly recedes to a collar that laces the glass.

The aroma is chocolate covered cherries, and dark fruits. There's also some grains and a little alcohol.

The flavor is bitter and burnt roast, licorice, chocolate, and a touch of sweet lactose. It has a pretty harsh bitter lingering aftertaste with a touch of sweetness. There is some alcohol in the finish but it is well hidden and not harsh. The mouthfeel is full and creamy with light carbonation.

Overall, it's a good but unbalanced impy stout. I don't remember it being this harshly burnt and bitter when I had it fresh - I would've thought it would've mellowed. It does become a bit more mellow as it warms.

Bottle courtesy of Brentfeesh: Poured a deep pitch-black color stout with a small dark brown head with minimal retention. Aroma of roasted malt is quite intense with some vanilla and coffee notes. Mouthfeel is very thick and enjoyable with nice roasted coffee notes; vanilla and mixed dry fruits such as figs and plums. Body is thick which fits perfectly the style with some limited carbonation. Another very good stout from this fine brewery.

This is some dark stuff! Blacker than the ace of spades with a nice tim horton’s iced cap froth. The aroma is a blast of authority. Lots of anise and dark ritter sport chocolate, black coffee with some tobacco and freshly laid tar. Tastes like I threw dark chocolate, tobacco, charred malts, coffee beans, dark rum, and molasses all in a blender, and am now drinking it. Word to yo’ momma. Long dry bitter coffee/chocolate-esqueness. Very full and heavy. Feels more like 20% ABV. I’ll talk it any day! Word, thanks Chris!

Black with a brown head. Molasses, cream, dark chocolate and nuts in aroma, notes of cherries amd alcohol. Full flavour of pepper, coffee, vanilla, bitter hops and alcohol. Bitter and slightly peppery warmoing finish of cherries and vanilla.
