This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.3% alcohol by volume.

Enjoyed in Vermont. Pours a clean, dark amber colour with a frothy light-beige head, good retention and creamy lacing. Slightly sweet malty aromas with some dark fruits, caramel and light oak. The wood shows up more in the taste creating a nice balance with the caramel and the hints of vanilla. Alcohol nicely hidden. Not as rich as expected, but lots going on, well-blended.

pours a light red or copper with a small head that sank to a rim of foam. The aroma is malty and sugary sweetness, fruity hop aroma, scotch ale sweetness and malt character, found and full nose. The taste is rich and robust, & fruity. The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied with a slightly bitter finish.

355 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgaard. ABV is 9.8%. 50 IBU. Cloudy brown colour, low beige head of poor retention. Sweetish malty aroma, notes of caramel and oak, hints of dark dried fruits and alcohol. Not as sweet flavour as I feared, malty and oaky, caramel and dried figs, well balanced with the hops, a nice bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Would buy again.

280 ml, on tap at the ICBF, Dublin 09/14. Poured in a session glass a clear and amber-copper coloured O A with a short one finger fine and beige foamy head that had a long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. Great lacing. The aroma is fruity, grapes, raisins on a solid toasted malty backbone, woody and honey notes. The flavour is citrussy fruits, dried fruits, raisins, apricots, nuts, toasted malts, caramel and spicy, vanilla and a ginger touch, molasses. The mouthfeel is fulled, syrupy and very smooth. The texture is oily. This full bodied O A has a lingering fruity finish. The alcohol is completely hidden during all the tasting and at the end, a nice warming feeling is emerging. Great and an unexpected outstanding experience

Pours a light- carbonation top. Light orange in color, a little oak aroma. An explosion of flavors upon tasting.I pick up a leathery taste and perhaps some berry notes. Then it boomerangs with a sharp dry bitterness. The alcohol seems to be well hidden, enveloped by all those good flavors.A well made Old Ale.

I just drank three VERY expensive and fantastic beers. This sucker surprised me outstanding. I've had several Founders beers and this one is the best so far it's like a barley wine. It's smooth in mouthfeel but just a wee bit sweet in taste. This is high in abv just like the other three one which was 15.2 and for the cost this is just as good. I drank this again on 6/11/2015 as a first beer and boy I can the sweet molasses.

A viscous amber pour, some floating sediment, slight white rim of head. Smells almost like a barley wine, very sweet malty profile, caramel, plum, vanilla and booze. Tastes much like a very strong barley wine mixed with some scotch. flavors of bourbon, oak, vanilla, tons of barley, caramel, banana, plum, raisins. a full bodied ale with some, but not a whole lot of carbonation. Overall its very heavy, boozy, thick and rich, this would be much better on a cold dreary night instead of a sunny 80 degree afternoon.

9.8% ABV- I'd best describe this as an in-between their Dirty Bastard and Backwoods Bastard (minus the bourbon flavor). Maybe not as malty as the scotch ale, but has some flavor in there. A little bitter up front, but balanced out by sweet molasses and oak. Tastes a lot like a barleywine. Some bread and mild fruit flavors. I was given a single in a trade, but this is a beer I will look out for in the future.

A murky reddish amber colored beer with a small, two fingered beige-white head rising above. Not much hang time. But a thick ringlet and moderate ringlet. A caramel-oaken nose. More of te same in the tasting with some vanilla bean. Big alcohol presence. Midium-full bodied, slick.

Six month old bottle into a snifter presents deep brown with a soapy off white head. I'm interested in how cloudy and hazed the brew is. Aroma of biscuits and with a subtle sweetness - honey, maybe. Major malt forward favors of biscuit and caramel along with nuanced dark fruits - figs, raisins, and faint cherry. Sweetness is present from the massive malt bill and helps with drinkability, but this is a sipper. I like this more with a little more age on it.
