The sixth OTOP beer is code named PEGALINA. Many of you who know me or have tried Heavyweight beers know that I love malt and malty beers. But I also enjoy drinking hoppy beers. I love Hopdevil (who doesn't) and DeRanke XX. I've not made one up till now because there are just so many of them out there. Well, this one's for someone near and dear who loves hoppy brews. Pegalina is made with German malts and British hops. It is fermented with a very boring American ale yeast (just kidding, thanks Gretchen). The beer possesses 50 or so IBUs.

07.10.04 tap @ HW open house. Orangey gold color. Seemed quite young to me, others at the tasting agreed. Nice malt backing makes it recognizably Heavyweight. Bready and sweet but with a harshly sharp, dry fresh hop bite. A welcome hoppiness, but too harsh it seemed for the type of hops used. Alas, the potential for this beer was evident and six weeks later it sounds like the beer has mellowed quite a bit.

Nice hoppy pale ale. Cloudy orange in color with a white head. Malty aroma. Well balanced beer. Great. Very drinkable.

Dough tasting ale with a bitter hop taste. I’m not sure what’s sour in this, but there’s something I can’t put my finger on (apricot?). Tastes more like an English Style IPA than a pale, but very drinkable.

Draft at Monks... This was a very interesting, IPA? Whoa... Poured a dark reddish caramel color, medium sized off white head, and nice lacing. Aroma of yeast, light citrus, and tropical fruits. Interesting flavors going on in the taste. It tasted somewhat sweet, citrus (orange peel), some pepper, a little alcohol, and finally finishing a little roasty. Light carbonation. This tasted very Belgian to me, hops were not all that pronounced.
