"I bought this beer some time ago and it was tucked in the back of the fridge, sitting there lonely and forgotten. I went to update my beer inventory the other day and low and behold I found this little nugget. I remember buying it and wanting to try it so I moved it to the front. Now it's sitting in a glass waiting for me to drink it.
Poured out into the glass this one looks amazing. Oozing out of the glass was a dark brown, practically black liquid that held up an amazing, finger thick tan head. Held up to the light, you can see a dark red glow around the edges. The aroma was pretty rockin too. Loaded and complex, the aroma has a lot going on with it as oak aging, nutty malts, caramel, alcohol, and even a hint of some sort of dark fruit fill my nose.
As I drink it down, I'm filled with winter warmth from the beer. The tan head laces the glass as I consume more like frost on a winter window. Roasted malts and maybe even some mossiness are the predominant flavor packed into this one and boy does it drink nice and thickly. Taking a back seat to the malts, you can even pick up on a light sweetness of possibly molasses tucked inside this one. The back end of the drink has a slight bitterness that really hits the spot and gets the taste buds moving. I sit here wondering why this has been hiding in my fridge for so long.
Overall, I like this one a lot. It's a great, hearty, thick winter brew that would be absolutely wonderful as an after dinner sipping drink, while you sit by the fire and chat up holiday stories with your friends. If you find some, get some and enjoy it. "

"My first impression of this beer reminded me of Samuel Smith's ale. Perhaps it was the sharp sour smell. The appearance is a deep ruby brown and there is a tight foam cap that leaves behind a spotted lacing on the glass. This is certainly an attractive beer (except for green medicine bottle package). Great mouthfeel. Almost nitrogenated. The taste is much like the smell. Sharp and sour. It is creamy, too. The finish is dry and you guessed it... sour. I wouldn't call this a winter ale, but it is very good."

[5] Review by Sigmund from Hafrsfjord, Norway who has tried this beer once. (3/9/2007 3:39:28 PM)
"500 ml green bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black, nice brown head. LOVELY vinous aroma with oak, raisins, chocolate, roasted malts, liquorice, some coffee. The flavour has much of the same elements as the aroma, chocolate and sweet malts (but not too sweet) are in front. A roasty and hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste. Very full and rich mouthfeel. Blimey - this IS an excellent beer! LUVVERLY!"
