Once brewed in Britain for the Russian Czars, this tremendously rich and thick ale uses a profusion of burnt and caramel malts. A massive mouthfeel of dark roasted malt and coffee flavors finishes with hints of chocolate, caramel and licorice.

"Bottle shared by Robert at SL. Pour was pretty typical for the style, deep dark black color, choco-colored head that was not all that big in size. The aroma was cocoa-chocolate and light roast, some faint vinous notes, lacking hop aroma. The flavor followed the aroma, chocolate (milk chocolate at that) at the fore of the experience with only light roasty character. Somewhat boring and lacking bold character to be excellent, but it was decent. Mouthfeel was full and silky."

[2] Review by Phil B from Gatineau, Canada who has tried this beer once. (12/8/2008 12:47:07 PM)
"Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a very thin light brown foamy head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma of black chocolate is pretty intense with some note of roasted malt. Taste is also a mix between some black chocolate and light roasted malt with some spicy notes. Body is a bit thin for the style with some low carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I thought this may lack some complexity but very enjoyable overall."

"Aromas of well-roasted grain, and port-like sweet figs and plums. Smells like a BIG beer. Dark, dark, dark brown body and a foamy brown head with light lacing. Mouthfeel is full and rich. Flavors are robust and complex. Rum-raisin chocolate, roasted malt, and some coffee bitterness. The finish unfolds through layers of assertive but pleasant flavors. This is a very good version of the style. Of the three impys from very good Wisconsin brewers I've tried in the last few days, this is my favorite. "

"Pours a deep dark black body with a big old tan creamy top. Lots of lacing, with plenty of aroma and flavors. Coffee, toffee and carmel aromas. Flavors are the same with a strong nutty roasted malted character. little carbonation, but that was cool. Great beer packed with tons of flavor- very glad i picked this one up! :)"

[5] Review by Singlemalter from Greenfield, WI, USA who has tried this beer once. (2/27/2007 12:18:10 PM)
"A nice impy! Pours absolutely jet-black (you could probably safely do welding or view an eclipse of the sun with your eyes shielded behind a pitcher of this brew!), with a very modest brown head that vanished quickly, except for a ring around the perimeter. That ring left some lacing, but not much. Aroma was full and chocolate-coffee, with toasted malt. Mouthfeel was very substantial and solid, and flavor repeated the aromatic notes, with a slightly fizzy effervescense on the tongue. A sweet finish, and the finish came all too soon. An eminently drinkable Imperial Stout from this U.S. brewery."
