Old Ale (also known as Stock" Ale), is a full-bodied beer with high levels of dextrins. In times past, this beer was typically laid up to mature, hence the name. The color varies from rich, dark amber to a very dark brown. This style features fruity, vinuous & deep, malty flavors, giving it an almost port-like qualities. Sight acidity is not uncommon.
Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label in 1994 & returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied “old ale” featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

"Pint at Rustico's New Year's Eve Firkin Fest, hand-pulled from a cask. This was a mighty impressive offering. Only my desire to work through the entire firkin catalog that night prevented my ordering round after round of this fine ale. Cloudy amber brown with an inch-high head and sticky lace. Aroma is a not unpleasant assault on the nose: like walking into an apothecary with myriad subtle scents. The flavor is malty, sweet, and rich, and the mouthfeel is full, smooth, and satisfying. Alcohol is well-hidden behind the molasses-like flavors that linger in the aftertaste. The intriguing complexities of this ale were certainly accentuated by the ideal serving temp of about 56 degrees. This well-made and well-presented ale is highly recommended."

"Caramel brown pour with smallish head no lacing. Musty caramel flavor with dark raisin and roast. Leathery mouthfeel. Lots of hop bitterness from a grassy pilsner like hop. Sort of defies style characterization. Very unique beer...worth a try."

"Bottle, pour was deep orange brown, typical old-ale / english barleywine like, light sedimentation visible at the end of the bottle, off white grain chunks or something. Weak head but decent lacing. The aroma was raisins, molasses, a touch of roast. The flavor was dark raisins, molasses, roasted malts (firm in the roast area), minty, and firmly hopped, much moreso than other old ales out there. Mouthfeel was full and robust, a firm brown ale base seemingly behind this, hopped with a zing amidst the firm roastiness. An enjoyable beer."
