The yeast culture comes from unopened beer bottles salvaged from a German freighter sunk in World War I.

"Strange, yeasty taste to this beer. Definitely carries the characteristics of a weissbier with bannana notes in the nose and palate. Metallic taste (and aroma if possible) were very apparent. Not a bad beer, but beyond the shipwreck yeast novelty not all that great."

"An odd-ball beer, that I haven't seen since I was a member of the Michael Jackson Beer-Of-The-Month Club a few years ago, and yet rediscovered in the back of a local liquor store cooler...,
My main complaint about the Michael Jackson Beer-Of-The-Month Club was that it tended to specilaize in obscure/discordant beers, that don't neccesarily deserve the recognition of the being shipped world-wide. How so? For example, a Mexican Scottish beer, a German Czech-style Pils, an Australian Porter, etc. And this one: a Sweedish Hefeweizen, made from the yeast recovered from a sunken German cargo ship's stash of WWI-era beer. All well and good, but how does the beer itself taste?
Unlike the rest of those previously mentioned examples, this particular discordant beer actually lives up to it's colorful history, up to a point, that is....
Adequate appearence and aroma -- very much in-line with what you'll see in any other respectable Wheat Beer. A little too "filtered" looking for a Hefe IMO, but that's just quibbling over details.
Decent mouthfeel -- kinda spritzy for a bottle that I suspect isn't as fresh as it could be. And refreshing enough on this hot San Diegian afternoon. Not very adventurous, and I've had better, but not horrible by any means.
Interesting, but nothing really that blows me away. Probably the only Swedish Hefeweizen I'll come across for a while, FWIW....

"Nice bright white head and generous lace, highly acidic, moderate carbonation, malty nose, with citrus tones, middle malt sweet and a bit of hop presence at the somewhat dry finish. Some chill haze noticed, and a bazillion tiny bubbles, to indicate the quality brewing. This beer has a great history, and is a must for all us beer geeks.
