Barrel-Aged Barleywine (December 22)
A heavy, sweet ale with a deep, copper color and lots of hops to balance the very large amount of malt. This very large beer has also been known to bite back.

"Sampled on 12/12/2008. Sample is from a 2006 vintage bottle. This barley wine pours a deep amber color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, toffee, fruity and sweet. A medium bodied barleywine. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. There is a hint of oak and wood, which is balanced nicely by the fruitiness. The hops are herbal and earthy. Touch of alcohol hotness. Good balance. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. "

"From the bottle, 2006 version. Pours a hazy dark copper with a long lasting off-white head. Aroma is malty with a fruit and wood presense. Flavor is malty and smooth. Alcohol presense is noticeable, but not overpowering. A really good beer. Thanks to either Dansting or Doncock for getting this for me (I've had it a while and can't remember which one)"

"Bottle. Poured a slightly cloudy copper color with a medium off-white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is faint but has a wood and malty scent. Flavor is malty with a definite wood flavor to it. Finish is caramel with a definite alcohol taste. One of the better Schlafly offerings, although maybe not worth the price."

"*from 750ml bottle* This beer pours a nice orangish brown, with a thin white head which goes quickly, but a white film remains on top. The aroma is very sweet, with vanilla being at the front. There is also a big alcohol aroma and some fruitiness in the background. The mouthfeel is very thick, just perfect..nice and heavy with just the right amount of carbonation. Oh wow, the flavor is just as spectacular as the aroma and mouthfeel. This beer has a sweet, nutty flavor with big vanilla notes. Upon swallowing you get this big alcohol warming that goes perfect with the falling snow out my window! As the beer warms you get a lot more wood flavor. I almost can't compliment this enough. Schlafly has outdone themselves on this and the Imperial stout in their Reserve line. Could be my favorite barley wine. You OWE it to yourself to try this beer, it is absolutely wonderful."

"I had a sample of this pulled off by one of the brewers at Tom Schlafly's new book signing a while back.
In fact this is not barrel-aged, but it is oaked, and well oaked, at that.
Smells of rich malt, alcohol, vanilla, caramel and dried, dark fruits, hops are minimal...this could probably pass for an old ale.
Copper brownish, with little head and nice legs on this small pour.
Rich and coating mouthfeel, velvety smooth and not chewy at all.
Woody, malty, rich and warming, medium-low bodied for a barleywine, but this one just fine in my books. Its no Bigfoot or Old Crusty, but a softer, woodier beast.
RERATE 2006 Vintage: I sampled a bit of this again at the St. Louis Microfest with one of the Schlafly fellas. This beer has come together in the months since release and at a year since brewing, it is doing quite well."
