If Pumpkin Ale strikes you as a recent invention, we’re afraid that Post Road cannot take the credit. Early American colonialists, wisely seeking natural ingredients for brewing ales, turned to pumpkins, which were plentiful, flavorful and nutritious. Often blended with barley malt, pumpkins became a commonly used beer ingredient. Dozens of recipes survive from that period, and Post Road Pumpkin Ale brings back this tasty tradition. Hundreds of pounds of pumpkins are blended into the mash of each batch, creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, biscuity malt center, and crisp finish. We expect that you will agree with our colonial forebears - when it comes to pumpkins, pie is fine, but ale is better. Availability: October through the holidays in 12-ounce bottles, 15.5 and 5.2 gal kegs.

"One of two pumpkin ales reviewed tonight. I did really enjoy their Brooklyn Lager, so decided to start with this one. It is always nice to find these good American brews at the LCBO. Pours a copper-orange colour with a nice medium head, with more than average retention, that creates decent lacing. The aroma that strikes first is the cinnamon. Then, a little nutmeg and pumpkin appears (if you really look for it). The mouthfeel is quite crisp and refreshing, being a little on the watery side. I am a bit surprised how this one does lack taste. I was expecting a lot of spices, but kind of on the dull side. Even the cinnamon does not stand out. Nothing bad about it, but just wishing for a bigger punch in the flavour section."

"12 oz bottle
5.0% ABV
I tried this beer on November 19, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent orange-red with a very thin very short-lived white head. The aroma is malty with pumpkin and spicy notes (cloves and nutmeg). The mouthfeel was medium bodied with above average carbonation. The flavour was primarily malty with some definite spiciness and a hop-laden finish. Better than the Great Lakes Pumpkin ale in my opinion."

"Color is a clear orangy amber, with a white head that doesn't stick around too long. Aroma is crisp and malty and has hints of pumpkin and cloves. Scrumptuous flavor is malty and spicy and has a real pumpkin undertone - apparently this beer is made with actual pumpkin, so they aren't faking it. Texture is lively and satisfying, and finish is smooth and tasty."

"Bottle: Poured a medium amber color ale with a good size foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of light pumpkin notes with some light cinnamon notes also distinguishable. Taste is also dominated by some light pumpkin and cinnamon taste. Wow, I was quite surprise by how bland and average this offering is. I was expecting something with a lot more character."

"Bottle:
Decants a clear amber-orange ale to the glass with a disappointing short lived rocky cap. Goes to a ring that leaves some lacing.
Interesting aroma: subtle cinnamon-nutmeg with grassy hops and a distinct herbaceous-vegetable mustiness from the roast pumpkin.
Front side has a piercing character from annoying over-carbonation but mellows mid palate where you get a distinct biscuity-dry-hoppy amber ale character mingling with the expected pumpkin spicing and earthy pumpkin tastes...finishes slightly bitter and clean with minimal after taste.
A decent enough pumpkin ale but I think a tad over-hyped."
