Meditate on this dark ruby elixir. Breathe in its deep emanations of fruit and spice. Is that clove you smell? Licorice? Fig? Sip serenely as revelations of honey, toffee, chocolate and dark dried fruit delight your senses. Can a beer be holy? you wonder, and Where can I get a grail on-line?
Ommegang, our first brew, was inspired by the centuries-old brewing practices of the Belgian Trappist monks. This burgundian brew gives off a variety of aromas, including plum and cinnamon, and packs in flavors such as caramel, toffee, and licorice. At 8.5% abv, it is known to cause spontaneous meditation.

"This brew poured a very appealing reddish brown with a small tan head that hung around longer than expected. The aroma is very complex but with difinet dark fruit, smoke and alcohol. The flavor was alcohol which improved as it warmed. Some bitterness and malt finally coming through and a fair amount of vanilla and oak. Mouthfeel was medium. Overall--I'd drink it again...."

"Nice one - a ruby-brown slightly murky pour with little head and some lacing. Ripe fruits - dates, apples, raisins, some berries - in the aromas with a touch of spice - cinnamon and a hint of clove - very aromatic. Taste is like a mature wine with many of the same elements of the aromas and some brown sugars, caramel then a touch of floral hops. Another very good beer from Ommegang. "

"This one's had about 6 months in the cellar (2 left; Lord, give me patience!) Poured into a snifter, clear red-brown color, 1+" off white head that settled down to a thin foamy ring, with moderate lacing. The aroma's wonderful and complex, dark fruits up front, plum, maybe fig, and a spiciness suggesting anise, maybe clove or cinnamon. Mouth is medium, quite smooth, carbonation lasts throughout the glass. Taste is everything the aroma promised, and then some... there's a cherry element that my nose missed, and a mild bite of alcohol as the glass warms. All in all, an excellent example of the style. "

"Thank you gully for yet a other high quality brew you smuggled back into the country in your bum. Body appears brown actually it seems more red but whatever, gully sucks. A small tan cap floats on top. Aroma is strange but very likable, its sour with bubble gum that been chewed to long, smoke, and black liquorish. There is a thousand different aromas going on I can’t pick them all out. First sip had a lot of rubbing alcohol in it of the rubbing variety but not in a bad way. A massive dark bitterness lingers in the back of my throat after every sip. Douche bag gully has convinced me I’m tasting lots of oak and I think he’s probly correct. Lots o prunes and on some sip sweet cherries that are in the middle of a black forest cake can be tasted. The more I drink the sweeter and more full bodied the taste becomes it also starts to get dry. Sour wood is showing up on my last few sips. Such a good beer, thanks gully. "
