"It pours a nice dark amber-mahogany with a thick, pale beige, fairly persistent head. Aroma is malty and has just a hint of fruit. Flavor is malty and has touches of smoke and molasses, pleasant but not thick or mouth-filling. Texture is smooth and just a little watery. Not too shabby.
Hey, how come it's called Mississippi Mud when it's brewed in New York? ;)"

"Big monolithic looking nifty unique jug container, a quart like no other! Really gives the impression of being like one of those xxx jugs you see in cartoons. Big brown pour, seems filtered, at least at first. Aroma of chocolate or carob is ever present. The first taste is rather pleasant, not extremely bitter and it seems much like a dark lager or a serene schartzbier. Chocolaty flavor carries over from the aroma. Much better than I imagined, for some reason. Good tingly carbonation is gamely apparent. Rather agreeable all round and the alky content is not too evident. Seems to come across like a cheap beer…with amicable manners. No hint of hop in this brew. Some roasty toasty hints in there but again, not on the bitter side. I would say this has the civility of darker low alky beers from the old country. Good quality finish for a lager lover, no annoying medicinal linger. I liked this cheapdark beer. One of the better porters I’ve encountered. Rather charming!"

"Despite its being rather average tasting, Mississippi Mud is really quite yummy. I haven't had one of these in many, many years. I decided to revisit it after developing an interest in playing the jug as an instrument. Full-bodied, thick head, well-blended (which I believe is not supposed to be the case for a black-and-tan, but in this situation, what can you do?). I really like the chocolaty flavors and porter-esque roasted malt taste. This combination of porter/pilsner is a great twist on the traditional style. "

[5] Review by Sap from Tucson, AZ, USA who has tried this beer once. (7/5/2008 5:32:00 PM)
"Pours with a tan colored, frothy, initially two-finger thick head. The beer is concentrated, burnt amber color that shows ruby and amber hues when held up to the light. The aroma is a mix of light roast notes, butter, toffee, well toasted grain and more diacetyl accented butter notes. While the diacetyl is not overwhelming it certainly plays a big role in the aroma profile of this brew; ultimately it is just too distracting.
Light bodied and quaffable, there is a noticeable sweetness to this brew up front and in the finish. The sweetness in the finish is accentuated by buttery, almost butterscotch diacetyl driven flavors. The diacetyl is not as noticeable in the flavor as it is in the aroma, but it still plays a significant role. Sweet grain, almost corn-like flavors are offset by a light roast character that provides a touch of burnt acidity, and a soft, toasted grain character to the finish. A light hop bitterness becomes more noticeable in the finish where it tends to lightly linger on in the palate after the beer has left my mouth. Can be a little thin at times, a bit more malt richness would certainly be welcome.
About what I expected, not horrible, though not something to write home about either. The soft diacetyl character certainly doesn't help. I'll certainly pass an having this again though."
