A full flavoured light beer
Microbreweries tend not to produce low alcohol beers; they're very difficult to get right. The reasons are because alcohol contributes a lot to mouthfeel, so light beers are sometimes described as lacking body, or being watery. To compensate for this, we have been generous with our hop additions, resulting in a bitter, spicy style of light. The hop variety is Saaz, sourced from Bohemia, north Czech Republic, home of the Pilsener. At five kilograms per batch, that's three times the quantity of our other brews. It shows in the aftertaste and aroma, slightly citric and a bit peppery.
In a typical brewpub set-up, it's difficult to control the fermentability of the wort produced, due to the single mash-tun set up. In our three vessel brewhouse we can use more malt, and tailor the final alcohol potential by temperature control in the mash mixer using steam jackets. This means we can achieve a full flavoured beer, without resorting to watering down the finished product.
Using just a sprinkling of roasted raw barley brings out the golden colour of the brew, and contributes to a slightly drier finish, which improves drinkability.
Aptly named because Mildura enjoys more hours of sun than even the Sunshine Coast! Regular drinkers of light beers will appreciate our efforts, as did the judges in the 2005 International Beer Awards, awarding us a trophy for best in class.
