"Dark amber colour, white head. Aroma is malty, hoppy and plummy. Also some caramel. The flavour is quite similar. Very wellbalanced. In my opinion very underrated. "

"I found a 6-pack in the local grocery in Maui and gave it a try. Boy was I glad. I'm always looking for a sweeter, less hoppy flavor and this was it. Now I trying to find a source in the San Francisco Bay area. Any suggestions."

"Great Red Ale out of Mehana in HI...I'd have to say that I was sceptical at first, but this easily turned out to be my favorite of the 3 Mehana bottles I sampled. brilliant reddish hue and lots of decent sized bubs. I really had to hold off from emptying my glass in the first minuite (the second one didn't last too long I can tell you) Yummy malt flavour and aroma and something else that I can't quite hit on. Good mouthfeel. MMMMMM...where's the keg?"

"My disdain for "Red" beers is pretty deeply ingrained, to be honest. All it takes is one overally-sweet and cloying Red beer, and my taste buds (and drinking session) are done for the evening. But I've had generally good luck with this particular brewery while here in The Islands, so decided to give this a try.
After I first popped the cap of this, and poured it into my glass, I was glad to see that I hadn't made a mistake with this beer, overall.
It was a little unussal that not only was this a Red beer that I didn't hate with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, but one of the very few ales I've ever run across that actually tasted better cold, and that it's flavor and mouthfeel degraded a bit as it warmed.
When I tasted this straight from my rather over-active hotel mini-fridge, the mouthfeel and plavor profile of this was pretty appealing, overall. Sturdy malt bill in the middle and backend, with enough bittering hops to give quality support to the mouthfeel and overall body of this beer.
But as it warmed, the rather sturdy body seemed to almost melt with it, if that make any sense. Sweet cloyingness creeped into play, and made this a bit less appealing later on.
But FWIW, I still enjoyed this, overall. A quirky red ale that ought to be consumed rather quickly for best effect. A tentative thumbs-up...
