OLD SMOKED BOCK 6.5% ABV
There is some debate as to the origins and meaning of the term Bock as a descriptor of beer. Many reference books state that it derives from the German town of Einbeck, which was noted for strong ales. Many German brewers, however, are sceptical.
In Germany Bock means brewed at a certain original gravity (16°Plato) and Doppelbock, means brewed stronger still. Elsewhere, Belgium for instance, it just means strong.
Consequently ‘Bock’ is not really a beer style. You can have wheat bocks, dark bocks, old bocks, light bocks and smoke bocks.
Meantime Old Smoked Bock is made with a blend of Munich and smoked malts, plus generous quantities of classic German hops varieties - Perle and Spalter.
If ‘chewy’ makes any sense when describing a beer then Old Smoked Bock is definitely a chewy beer, with a savouriness that reminds you that these old style beers were, for most people, food as well as drink.
This is a beer to go with hearty warm winter food; casseroles, heavily sauced meats, or strong cheese with tangy pickle and brown bread.

"Pours out in a hazy reddish amber colour with a rich lasting tan-colored foam. Solid malty and smokey aroma of tar, wood, bacon and toasted malts. Medium-bodied with notes of smoked meat, toasted malts, anise and tar. Smooth mouthfeel. Anise, smoke and toasted malts in the medium-bitter finish."

"This smoked beer pours a medium amber color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is malty with a touch of smoke. A medium bodied smoked bock. Malts are caramel and sweet with a touch of wood and smoke. It really more of a bock than a smoked beer, the malt sweetness and caramel and toffee are really overshadowed the smoked aspects. The smoke is there but shows up nearly at the finish. Very smooth tasting beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. "

"Pours with an amber-brown body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with a nice molasses note and a hint of smoke in the finish. Medium to full bodied, smooth and a touch dry in the finish."

"This one pours a hazed brown body with a smallish head. The aroma is a good, balanced wood smoke and brown bread maltiness. Relatively dry. This is a pretty good example of a good smoked beer."
