Oompah is a hybrid beer. It uses a standard recipe for a malty Octoberfest style beer, but the wort is fermented not by standard German lager yeast, but rather our house ale yeast. The resulting brew has the malt flavor and sweetness of Octoberfest but not the clean crisp lager character. Instead, Oompah has the fruity ale yeast fermentation flavors. Many American microbreweries use ale yeast to ferment their Octoberfest, but few are up front about it. Only Lovejoys, the truly righteous, maintains integrity. The hop bitterness is low but there is notable German hop aroma’s and flavors. This is quite like brown ales or Scottish ales and compares favorably to both. True Octoberfests are brewed in the spring, aged all summer, and served at a festival in mid-September, that lasts for six weeks. PROST!
