"Another of the rare and wonderful brewpub-only offerings that I got a nice-sized sample of while at the Kona Brewing Company brewpub on The Big Island of Hawaii. And although I'm not big on the traditional "CA Common/Steam Beer" style, I can quite easily see getting this hoppier cousin-of-a-Steam Beer again.
Nothing special to look at, but then comes the aroma. Damn -- somebody likes Northern Brewer around these parts! Along with the extensive hopping in the Flavor department (but not so much so in the Bitterness per se), this still comes across as something of a much-more-hoppy Anchor Steam than anything else. And believe me, I'm not complaining...!
A little raw in the backend, which I'm sure will mellow with a little age (the sample I had was almost too-fresh, IMO). But the overall drinkability of this sort of beer can be summed up with a "Hell Yeah! I can drink think this all night long....".
Not going to win any awards, when it comes to sticking to style-guidlines, but for normal everday drinking, this is a winner in my book. Recommended.
