Winner of the First Prize Gold Medal at the International Brewers’ Exhibition in 1980, this beer is brewed to an original gravity of 1036° -1040° from a recipe which has evolved over many years. It is a full, well-hopped bitter with a reputation that exceeds the borders of its native and adjoining counties.

"I love bitters - they are certainly one of my favorite styles. For me, this was a great bitter enjoyed at the brewery in Lewes. The beer came out of a forced draft and was full bodied and easy to drink. The quintessential British Bitter. Well done. "

"Cask at Market Porter, London. Amber colour, low white foam. Distinct hop aroma of hay, sweat and grapefruit with undertones of toasted grains and grass. Light-bodied with dryish flavour of hay, earth and lemon. Bitter finish of hay-like and mild lemony hops. Good!"

"Coppery amber colour with small white head. Aroma is hops, slight earthy skunkyness. Flavour is very much the same, but has a huge wooden finish and aftertaste to it. Also some herbs noteable. "

"Had this at 1066 Pub in Battle. Very decent brew but an aquired taste. Nice amber colour with a tiny bit of head. Very aromatic , no carbination. Some sweet fruit flavours. Decent brew"

"Cask conditioned at the White Horse, Parsons Green, London. Copper colour, moderate to low head. Very aromatic, dark fruits and barnyard. Dry hopped in the cask at the pub? Interesting hoppy and spicy bite from start to finish. An excellent bitter! (A pint I had later at The Tottenham was not nearly that good. A well kept cask is a must!) "
