Fred From the Wood was aged in new, medium toast oak barrels for around a year and then allowed to mellow for 6 more years. Brewed in 1997. Occasionally available at the brewery and occasionally other places only in limited quantities.

"Hard to control myself after tasting this wonderful beer. I had taken it to a party for my neice's graduation party and the theme for the beers I had selected was barrel aged. This was a fantastic example of a barrel aged barleywine. The aroma is inviting, sweet malts, slightly boozy, with a nice dose of wood, fruits, hops, and brown sugar. The color looks like something you'd find pouring out of an old rusty radiator. The flavor in this beer just melds so nicely together. Sweet malts, citrusy hops, vanilla, oak, alcohol, brown sugar, tobacco and slightly floral. Highly recommended and well worth it's good name."

"Bottle from aracauna, batch 64. The pour was much more tame than regular HoDF, yet for a barrell aged production, pretty carbonated, steady bubbles rising in the hazy orange/amber body, light peach colored head, great retention, sticks around, laces well, almost continuously on the walls within an inch of the surface anyway. The aroma was a gentle blend of oak, maple, caramel, and pine. The flavor was zingy piney brandy, wet wooden oak, caramel, molasses, vanilla, tobacco, and all sorts of light fruit notes of somewhat indistinguishable (peaches, apricots?) character for each sip, and even some darker fruits (rum soaked raisins). The alcohol was quite smooth and gentle, but this thing got a little liquor-bwine sweet, despite a good zingy piney hop finish with prickly carbonation. Sure, it's all part of the style, so it's not a killer, but it did keep this from knocking my socks off. A much better experience than my earlier singleton w/ regular HoDF, but that could also be in part due to evolving taste buds. Thanks, Jacob!"

"Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a medium yellow color ale with a small foamy white head with minimal retention and lacing. Aroma of oak and sugar is totally dominated by hot alcohol. Taste is totally dominated by hot burning alcohol which is not something that I am usually fond of. Some oak and sweet malt were discernable but still totally overshadowed by the alcohol. I honestly could hardly taste the original Fred in here and I sure could not tell if there were any hops in there. I’m glad I got the chance to try that one but it sure is not something I will seek again."

"A citrus and whiskey aroma. It poured an amber color with little head. The flavor was nice with some citrus and vanilla notes. The whiskey made its presence known. The aftertaste was warming and creamy. Overall a fine beer!

"Pours brownish-orange, so cloudy it appears thick, with small head. The aroma is wonderfully perfumy with notes of burnt sugar, whisky, and flowers. The strong mature flavor was worth waiting for. It has a rich, semi-sweet malty base highlighted and balanced by toffee, wood, tart cherry, pepper, and a bright hoppy finish. The body is big and full with mild carbonation. Also, it's very smooth despite a moderate warming effect. Loved it with a capital L. Good luck to the other bottle I bought...lasting in my cellar."
