"This beer has a sweet malty aroma with a deep mahogany appearance with a very full mouthful. The flavor is of roasted malts and deep in tone. Very full beer. Very wintery."

"I wasn't too sure about this beer overall. It was a good wintertime beer, but there were a few things that could have been much better, hence a better beer. A nice aroma of spices, a little hint of chocolate covered raisins and some figs. Appearance was absolutely awesome with a deep blood red color with incredible lacing and a nice 3 finger head. Mouthfeel was clean, soft yet it left me wondering if it was a little flat somehow. Flavors were average with heavy malts, smallish hops and a nice dose of nuttiness. Is this a good wintertime beer? Sure. Can it stack up against the big boys (Scaldis Noel, etc)? Not a chance."

"12 oz bottle, purchased 4/06, dated 4/11/06. Pours a dark brownish ruby red with a frothy off white head that dissipates to a thin film that laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet doughy (almost play-doh) chocolate malts with a little mint.
The flavor is sweet malts, some tea-like spices, nuttiness, and a touch of fruits followed by a subdued grassy hoppiness that leaves a bitter aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium but kind of watery.
Overall, a decent Christmas beer. It's kind of reminiscent of the Hibernation, but not quite as good."

"A tale of two cities with this beer for me. Looks and aroma were great and the flavor was from somewhere else. Nice deep amber coloring and a full head. Aroma was the highlight - nice fruity backdrop that highlighted oranges spiced with cinnamon; melded beautifully with the hops. Beer lacked body and the same ingredients that produced those wonderful aromas apparently petered out when attempting to produce a similar taste. Other than a nice bitter bite in the finish and aftertaste this beer was a disappointment in the taste department. Maybe it was a bad batch."

"Solid winter beer, this is. Aroma is weaker than I remember from previous years, but mostly malt with a bit of spice/hops. Pours a dark brown with an okay head that left some lace. Flavor is a very well balanced mixture of malt and hops. There’s some spice esters floating around in there mixed with the dark fruits. There’s a nice citric bite to it that’s not quite PNW hopish. Very pleasant! Palate is thick and creamy, yet crisp! Overall, this is a must-try for the winter season."
