Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

"I really enjoyed this beer. It pours a hazy amber with a quickly fleeting head. There’s a really interesting fruitiness (I’m going to assume it’s the hawthorn). A bit of honey on the nose. Fairly mellow, but still flavorful. Really tasty."

"Comes out of the bottle a nice clear golden-amber with a hint of orange. Aroma is crisp and hoppy with a bit of an alcohol bite and a touch of citrus. Flavor is hoppy, crisp and edgy, with some malt element and a strong orange hint - rather different from other beers I have tried, perhaps because the recipe is supposed to be 9,000 years old. It is smooth with just a little bitterness and a hint of orange flavor in the aftertaste."

[3] Review by Qatfish from Alexandria, VA, USA who has tried this beer a couple times. (11/27/2007 6:25:51 PM)
"Pours a slightly hazy golden color with no head at all. Smells like a sweet champagne, grapey with an almost metallic tang... and plenty of haw fruit. The haw dominates, giving this beverage a very Chinese flavor, but honey and grape are also present. It tastes light and crisp, but it feels a bit heavier. Sticky and sweet with a very pleasant underlying bitterness in the background. Good stuff."

"It helps if you read about this beer before you drink it.. Golden in color with not very much head. Medium mouthfeel and a very balenced flavor... Kind of erotic to drink , My Wife and I are having this together and the history behind is is amazing"

"Aroma is of spices as well as some sweet honey comb and some ripe white grapes when held to the nose. Appearance is a murky golden-bronze in color when held to the light with a medium head on top but then dissipates very quickly to a very thin lacing that is bleach-white in color and leaves hardly any lacing. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light-bodied with extreme complexity and balance with a palate that is very wet-like and smooth. Flavor is of spices as well as ripe grapes and some honey and maybe some vanilla with an aftertaste that is clean and very crisp with a finish that is light and not alcoholic whatsoever. Overall, what a strange brew here with depths of complexity and balance that are full of honey and spice; 9,000 yrs. old, wow, this beer is extremely drinkable... "
